I may write with my right hand and use right handed scissors
but I was born a lefty.
When I started playing the piano, my teachers would always
ask me if I was left handed because I played stronger with my left.
As I got older, I took notice that I did a lot of everyday
tasks with my left hand but found it weird that I used my right hand to write.
At first I thought I was ambidextrous. Then one day I asked
my parents what the real deal was. That’s when they told me.
When I was about a year old, I started using my left hand to
do the simple things; like eating. Anytime I would do so, my parents would slap
my hand and encourage me to use my right.
Back in the 80’s – and probably
way before that – anyone who was left handed was considered “dumb”.
I couldn’t believe it. All those times I would make fun of
left handed people, I was actually one of them! I felt cheated, lied to and disappointed
that they would think that left handed people were dumb considering that my youngest
sister is also a lefty.
About three years ago, I found out that we lefties have our
own day, Left Handers Day. I also came across the Left Handers Club website.
From then my goal was to do a complete switch – to use my left hand for
everything, including writing. Unfortunately, it hasn’t happened as yet.
There are tons of famous Lefties out there but here are 13 worth
mentioning:
Bill Clinton
Barack Obama
Jay Leno
Paul McCartney
Tom Cruise
Whoopi Goldberg
Jim Henson
Angelina Jolie
Nicole Kidman
Sarah Jessica Parker
Dick Van Dyke
Larry Bird
Barry Bonds
To my Left Handed Family, Friends and faithful Readers –
today is OUR day. Happy International #LeftHandersDay!
Are you left handed? If so, what struggles did you face (if any) being a lefty?
